PPG Industries today welcomed members of the local community to its Tianjin coatings plant for the first time, as part of the global celebration of the International Year of Chemistry.

TIANJIN, China, Nov. 24, 2011 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) today welcomed members of the local community to its Tianjin coatings plant for the first time, as part of the global celebration of the International Year of Chemistry. Nearly 100 people from the town, as well as school and media representatives, attended the event, which showcased PPG’s sustainable products and efforts.

This is the second time PPG has participated in an open-to-public day organized by the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM). PPG and 24 other international chemical companies that are AICM members signed the “Responsible Care Beijing Manifesto” in 2008 and committed to assuming the social responsibility expected of China’s chemical industry, including participating in open-to-public days at least once in the following four years. PPG first participated in an open-to-public day organized by AICM last year in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP).

“As an international company with a 128-year history, PPG is dedicated to sustainable development to ensure the future of its business as well,” said Cathy Yan, PPG general manager, government affairs and business development, Asia/Pacific. “Today, we are pleased to welcome so many visitors to PPG Tianjin, the company’s largest coatings plant in the world, to provide them with a better understanding of our ‘green’ products and best practices in sustainability. We believe that this event will encourage visitors to have a different view of the chemical industry.”

In its 14 manufacturing plants in China, PPG complies with high environment, health and safety standards, striving to minimize negative impact on the environment. In addition, PPG is committed to developing “green” products, most of which are formulated to promote environmental sustainability by reducing energy consumption, volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and water use. These sustainable products alone are anticipated to generate just under $3 billion in sales before 2015.

“PPG holds recognition of the concerns and needs of society as a key corporate value,” Yan said. “During this open-to-public day, we hope visitors see why the chemicals industry is important and that we are making efforts to ensure the safety and sustainability of our operations, as sharing this information with the public is a goal of the International Year of Chemistry.”
