CARLISLE, Pa., Feb. 9, 2011 – The PPG Industries Foundation has donated $3,000 to the Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center, Inc., to help cover upkeep costs for the Carlisle Theatre, shown at left, such as upgrades to the venue’s projection equipment and sound system.

“We are very grateful for this support from PPG,” said Rick Rovegno, board president of the Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center. “It has helped us to cover the considerable costs of maintaining and upgrading this great historical venue so we can continue to bring a variety of high-quality performances to the Carlisle community.”

Originally called The Comerford when it opened in May 1939, the Carlisle Theatre flourished through the 1960s but entered a state of decline in the 1970s, and it closed in 1986. In 1990, local citizens formed the Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center, Inc., and launched a fund-raising campaign to support restoration efforts. The group purchased the property in 1991 and reopened the revitalized theatre in 1993. It is now used for films, plays, concerts and community events, and it is one of the principal forces behind the revitalization of downtown Carlisle.

“PPG is strongly committed to supporting the communities where its employees work and live,” said Tom Abbas, plant manager for PPG’s glass manufacturing facility in Carlisle. “We are proud to support the Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center in its efforts to maintain the historical theatre and to help introduce local audiences of all ages to the performing arts.”

Established in 1951, the PPG Industries Foundation demonstrates the values of PPG Industries by enhancing the quality of life in communities where the company has a presence. Interests of the foundation, in order of priority, are education, human services, culture and arts, and civic and community affairs. PPG also supports charitable causes by encouraging employee volunteerism and executives’ involvement with nonprofit organizations.
