OAK CREEK, Wis., Jan. 3, 2011 – The PPG Industries Foundation has donated $3,000 to the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee, South Shore Center, to support the SPLASH learn-to-swim program for second-graders.

"We are very pleased to receive support from PPG for this program," said Tina Kreitlow, executive director, South Shore Center YMCA. "Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 14, and the Y's goal is that, in a city where water is so prevalent, we'll improve each child's ability to be safe around water and teach them skills that can be used at the local pool or near a large body of water, such as Lake Michigan."

Nearly 1,000 local second-graders participate each year in SPLASH, a six-week water safety program offered free of charge at the South Shore Y. Once a week during the program, participants visit the Y’s pool to learn how to be safe in and around the water.

“PPG is strongly committed to supporting the communities where its employees work and live,” said Joel Fechter, plant manager at PPG Industries’ industrial coatings manufacturing facility in Oak Creek and a board member of the South Shore Y. “We are proud to support the South Shore Y in helping kids to enjoy and be safe in the water.”

Established in 1951, the PPG Industries Foundation demonstrates the values of PPG Industries by enhancing the quality of life in communities where the company has a presence. Interests of the foundation, in order of priority, are education, human services, culture and arts, and civic and community affairs. PPG also supports charitable causes by encouraging employee volunteerism and executives’ involvement with nonprofit organizations.
